The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to build a 21 Km water tunnel linking Yevai and Kasheli in Thane to Mulund. The project will unfold in two phases with an estimated cost of 4,500 INR-Crore.
BMC has issued the work order for the proposed project with construction expected to start within a month. The tunnel from Kasheli to Mulund will run alongside the ongoing expansion of the Mumbai-Nashik highway. Additionally, BMC will construct a water tunnel from the Yevai Reservoir to Kasheli in Bhiwandi. Earlier this year, in March, the authority invited tenders for the said 14 Km water tunnel, alongside a 7 Km segment from Kasheli to Mulund.

The civic body has finally appointed a contractor to begin the work. The construction of these two water tunnels will likely complete within 6-7 years, resulting in higher capacities They will also be designed to prevent leakages and contamination.
Moreover, BMC is considering to build several major underground water tunnels. These will connect key locations like Marol and Mahim, Malabar Hill and Cross Maidan, Veravali and Yari Road, as well as Gundavili and the Bhandup Complex. Two smaller tunnels are also in the pipeline, linking Powai, Veravali, and Ghatkopar. These new water tunnel will greatly enhance the city’s water supply system.
