The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday, February 29, approved three proposals for setting up semiconductor plants worth an estimated investment of INR 1.26 Lakh-Crore, entailing two plants in Gujarat and one in Assam. These semiconductor facilities will be set up by TATA Group and Murugappa Group-owned CG Power. The construction is expected to begin within three months and will generate 26,000 direct and 100,000 indirect employment opportunities.
The centerpiece of the approved proposals is setting up India’s inaugural commercial semiconductor fabrication unit by TATA Electronics Pvt Ltd (TPEL), a subsidiary of TATA Group. The project will be developed at an estimated INR 91,000 Crore in a joint venture with Taiwan-based Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC). It will be set up in Dholera, Gujarat and have a capacity to produce 50,000 wafers per month. The project is envisaged to be a vital contributor to the domestic semiconductor supply chain.

The second project approved by the cabinet is to set up an ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packging) facility in Assam’s Morigaon. It will see an estimated investment of INR 27,000 Crore and will be developed by TATA Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT) in partnership with two reputed American conglomerates. The project will give an output of 48 Million chips per day.
Lastly, Murugappa Group-owned CG Power, in partnership with Japanese semiconductor manufacturer Renesas Electronics Corporation and Thailand’s Stars Microelectronics, will set up a semiconductor plant in Gujarat’s Sanand at an estimated investment of INR 7,600 Crore. The ATMP facility will yield nearly 15 Million chips per day and will be the second facility in Sanand.
