CMRL begins tunneling in Royapettah

On Sunday, July 21, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) commenced tunneling in Royapettah. As part of the grand Phase II Project, CMRL will construct an underground station in Royapettah. This endeavor, which is a part of corridor 3 (Madhavaram to SIPCOT), will cost an estimated INR 250 Crore

The Royapettah Metro station, positioned beneath Westcott Road at a depth of 21.5 Meters, will span 150 Meters in length and 22 Meters in width. Four TBMs will emerge from this site. TBM ‘Bhavani’, which has just begun its journey, is expected to take around seven months to traverse 910 Meters to reach R.K. Salai.

Corridor 3, with its extensive underground network, will connect key locations such as Madhavaram, Ayanavaram, Purasawalkam, Nungambakkam, Thousand Lights, Royapettah, and Adyar. It is expected to become fully operational within the next four years. Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin recently inspected the Phase II Project work at the Alapakkam Metro station, which is part of corridor 4 (Light House to Poonamallee). This segment will stretch approximately 3.75 Km and include stations such as Alwarthirunagar, Valasarawakkam, Karambakkam, and Alapakkam.
