Tamil Nadu Government plans to extend Chennai’s Metro Rail by another 93 km for better connectivity. The plan involves the extension of the ongoing Poonamallee to Sriperumbudur line of Chennai Metro Rail by 28 km to end at Parandur Airport, which is currently in the process of land acquisition and master planning.

The proposed project will have metro stations at every 7-10 km distance between the Poonamallee to Parandur stretch, as opposed to the usual 800m – 1km distance in Phase I and the other lines. The trains will be designed to be faster with modified train coaches and tracks for increased efficiency to compensate for the distance and time taken between the stations.

The plan also involves the construction of a metro station inside the airport for easy access to the terminals. CMRL (Chennai Metro Rail Ltd) will be the first to get approval to construct a metro line running from the city to the new airport. The reason for multiple stops in Parandur is the government’s plans to develop an aerocity – township that includes educational institutions, aviation ancillary units, hotels, and a Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) center for the airport.
