Background:

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has been entrusted with the development and construction of Chennai Central Square Project. Central Square will be a hub for seamless multimodal transportation.

Project Specifications:

The total extent of land of Central Square is about 65,620 sq.m. which is estimated to cost at around Rs.400 crores. It will not only connect four stations but also have huge space for bus bays so that passengers can switch from one mode of transport to another, subways and extensive landscaping as well.

The major component of the Central Square is a 29-storeyed building that Chennai Metro plans to build opposite the Chennai Central Metro which will be given out on lease for shopping and office space.

Central Square will have a multi-storied parking lot at its basement, which will also form the foundation of the complex. The 3-storeyed parking lot will have the capacity to accommodate 1000 cars.

Current Scenario:

A metro rail official said preliminary work for the construction of the underground parking has started. Construction for the Central Plaza, which will accommodate bus bays and several commuter amenities, will begin once the parking lot is ready.

L&T Geostructure has bagged the contract from Chennai Metro to build a section of this project. It will build 3 basements that will serve as a large car parking area as well as the foundation.
