The Chennai Metro Line 5 (Grain Market – Puzhuthivakkam) is currently under construction. The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is developing this project. Corridors 3, 4, and 5 with a total length of 118.9 km are proposed under Chennai Metro Phase 2. Corridor 5 of the Chennai Metro Phase 2 will run from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Sholinganallur. Corridor 5 of the Chennai Metro Phase 2 will be 47 km long and will serve 48 metro stations.
Package C5-ECV-02 of corridor 5 includes the construction of an elevated viaduct of approximately 12.431 km length between CMBT Metro station and Puzhuthivakkam Metro Station. This includes special spans and construction of 12 elevated stations. The total project construction cost is INR 1,500 crores. The project began in 2021 and the project completion date is 2026. As of August 2022, pillar work is in progress on the Grain Market – Puzhuthivakkam Section. Piling work is in progress at the Adyar River.

The Government of Tamil Nadu created a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for implementing the Chennai Metro Rail Project. On December 3, 2007, they incorporated this SPV, named Chennai Metro Rail Limited, under the Companies Act. It is now a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu.
