Himachal Pradesh will soon get its first international airport at Nagchala of Mandi district. The Airports Authority of India has completed a technical survey related to obstacle limitation surfaces and discussions are going on for the construction of airport for the operation of wide-bodied aircraft.

On August 2019, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur requested Finance Commission Chairman N K Singh for a special purpose grant of Rs 2,000 crore towards the construction of the airport.

He added that the state is vulnerable to natural disasters like flash floods, cloudbursts, forest fires, droughts and avalanches. Therefore, there is a need for enhancing the size of State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

Himachal Pradesh has three existing airports at Shimla, Gaggal in Kangra district and Bhunter in Kullu district but are unable to handle heavy duty aircraft and international flights.
