Karnataka Maritime Board, on Thursday, November 16, awarded the bid for developing an all-weather, deep-water, greenfield port at Keni, Karnataka, to JSW Infrastructure (a subsidiary of JSW Group) on a PPP Mode (Public-Private Partnership). The estimated construction cost is 4,119 INR-Crore with a capacity of 30 MTPA (metric tonne per annum) in the initial phase (with further potential to increase substantially over time).

The proposed port is located strategically between two operational major ports – Mormugao Port (in the North) and New Mangalore Port (in the South). It will include modern environment-friendly-mechanized facilities for handling cape-sized vessels.

The project is envisioned as an all-weather, greenfield, multi-cargo, direct berthing, deep-water commercial port for handling all types of cargo on the west coast of North Karnataka, serving the industries in Ballari, Hospete, Hubballi, Kalaburagi, and South Maharashtra.

The development work of the Keni port as an integral part of the State’s Maritime Infrastructure and Trade gateway will start as soon as the concession agreement is signed.
