Maharashtra Govt gives nod for building New City called ‘Third Mumbai’

Maharashtra state government has finalized the broad skeletal proposal for developing a new city named ‘Third Mumbai‘ to cater to the rising demands of the growing population. The project aims at providing better housing & infrastructure, boosting economic activity, contributing to the country’s GDP, and robust transportation facilities.

The proposed project will be developed around the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). It will connect to Mumbai via the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL/ also known as Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu). It will include all the crucial infrastructure such as residential complexes providing luxury and affordable housing, commercial complexes, hubs for MNCs and banks, data centers, financial companies, large knowledge parks, and robust public transport.

The proposed development envisages:

  • Developing a second BKC in Navi Mumbai’s Kharghar around nearly 150 hectares of land parcel (reserved solely for commercial development).
  • A metropolitan region capable of generating approximately USD 0.25 trillion economy.
  • Reshaping the far ends of MMR (Mumbai Metropolitan Region)
  • Developing a new Panvel-Karjat suburban rail corridor (three tunnels and two rail flyovers).
  • Forming a New Town Development Authority (NTDA) which will manage nearly 200 villages. These villages include parts of Ulwe, Panvel, Pen, Uran, Karjat, and the surrounding regions.
