Talmakiwadi, a cooperative housing colony nestled in Mumbai’s Tardeo area, is set to undergo a transformative self-redevelopment process. Established in 1938, this iconic housing society spans 7961 SqM and comprises 11 chawl-style buildings, common toilets, two flat buildings, shops, and tenanted houses.
The housing society’s General Body recently granted approval for the ambitious project, signaling a commitment to revitalizing the aging infrastructure. It has been in the works since October 2022, and residents are determined to preserve Talmakiwadi’s heritage while embracing modern conveniences.

Funding remains a critical challenge for the redevelopment project. However, residents are exploring innovative financing options, including “Loan Stock Bonds.” Interestingly, this mirrors the original financing approach used when the buildings were constructed in 1938. Next month, residents will convene to discuss fundraising strategies and chart the course for Talmakiwadi’s transformation.
