Power Grid to build 20,000 INR-Crore Green Energy Corridor-II in Ladakh

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), on October 18, approved phase II of the Green Energy Corridor (GEC-II) in Ladakh. The state-owned Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL) will be implementing the Viability Gap Funding (VGF)

GEC-II is an Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) project that aims to connect 13 GW (gigawatts) of forthcoming renewable energy projects in Ladakh. It is estimated to be completed by FY 2029-30 at the approximate cost of 20,773.70 INR-Crore. 40% of this cost (approximately 8309.48 INR-Crore) will be covered by Central Financial Assistance (CFA).

The overall project involves the construction of 713 km of transmission lines with a 480 km High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) line and two 5 GW (gigawatts) HVDC terminals at Pang in Ladakh and Kaithal in Haryana.

The transmission lines for this project will run through Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, integrating with the National Grid at Kaithal in Haryana. An additional Ladakh grid interconnection is planned to ensure a reliable power supply. It will also provide power to Jammu and Kashmir through the Leh-Alusteng-Srinagar line.
