The Railway Ministry has stepped up its involvement in the new suburban railway station between Thane and Mulund. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the Railway Ministry will fund and execute all works within the station’s operational area.
The total project cost amounts to an estimated INR 264 Crore. Of which, INR 185 Crore will cover developing the operational area, including constructing the administration building, laying tracks, and building platforms. The new station is situated on the former Thane Mental Hospital grounds.

While the Railway Ministry tackles the core station infrastructure, Thane Smart City remains responsible for developing the surrounding area. This includes building roads, elevated highways connecting to external expressways, parking spaces, and bus stations. Initiated in 2019, the project has achieved approximately 30% progress and aims for completion by December 2025. Once operational, the new station is expected to significantly alleviate passenger congestion at the existing Thane station.
