Vadhavan Port, being developed by Vadhavan Port Project Ltd (VPPL), a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) formed between JNPA (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority) and the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), is set to become one of the top 10 ports in the world. It will be an all-weather greenfield deep draft major port located in the Palghar district of Maharashtra. Once completed, it will be one of the deepest seaports in India.
Project Overview:
On June 19, 2024, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the development of this deep-water port near Dahanu, Maharashtra. Vadhavan port is estimated to cost INR 76,220 Crore (USD 9.1 Billion). This includes land acquisition and the development of core and commercial infrastructure. The estimated construction cost of the project is INR 5,000 Crore.
Development Phases and Scope –
The upcoming mega project will cover an anticipated 17,471 hectares (Ha). Of this, nearly 16,900 hectares will be within the port limits, and 571 hectares will be outside. It will be developed in two phases. Phase 1 is expected to be completed by 2030, while Phase 2 will be finished between 2035 and 2039. VPPL will handle the basic infrastructure, including breakwaters, rail and road linkages, power & water lines, and common services. Meanwhile, the awarded agencies will develop the cargo handling infrastructure for the port.
Vadhavan Port Key Features –
Vadhavan Port will have a cumulative annual capacity of 298 Million Metric Tonnes (MMT). The container handling capacity will be 23.2 Million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) per year. Of this, Phase 1 will handle 15 Million TEUs. Key features of the port include:
- 9 container terminals: Each with a straight 1,000 m long marginal quay. Seven terminals have container storage yards directly behind the quay apron, while two have yards about 1km behind the quay.
- 4 multi-purpose berths: Each 250m long, located at the southern end of the reclamation.
- 4 liquid bulk berths: Located on the lee-side of the breakwater.
- 1 Ro-Ro berth: At the southwest end of the offshore reclamation, with adjacent vehicle parking.
- Berths for small craft: Pilot boats, tugs, and coastguard berths at the southern end of the reclamation. Additional berths may be provided at the northern end if needed.
- Rail terminal: Located along the eastern side of the offshore reclamation.
- Onshore reclamation: For liquid bulk storage and administrative facilities.
Vadhavan Port Project Benefits –
The Vadhavan Port project will significantly strengthen connectivity along the Maharashtra coastline. It is expected to enhance the state’s economy and positively impact the socio-economic profile of Vadhavan and Dahanu. Post-completion, it will serve as a gateway port for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) and the International North-South Transportation Corridor (INSTC).
The project will generate nearly 12 lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities and contribute to skill development in the local workforce. It will also likely lead to improvements in transport, communication, health facilities, and other basic infrastructure.
Infrastructure Development around Vadhavan Port –
The government has approved road connectivity between the port and national highways, developed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Additionally, there will be a rail linkage to the existing rail network and the upcoming dedicated rail freight corridor by the Ministry of Railways.
