She also delves into the industry’s growth, key factors driving the Asia Pacific region’s prominence, and the exciting opportunities on the horizon.
1 Suhani, can you share what inspired you to start Sparc Design in 2010 and the journey that led you to become a Principal Architect?
Inspired by the fire in my belly to design and create – the “Sparc” – I founded Sparc Design in 2010; by the infinite boundaries of design possibilities, fueled by my power to bring a change to peoples lifestyles. After graduating from Sir JJ College of Architecture in 2004, like most Architects, I aspired to start my own firm. I took the plunge 6 years later after honing my skills with the best design firms in the industry.

2 With over 18 years of experience, how have your early career experiences shaped your approach at Sparc Design?
Early in my career, I had the privilege of working with prestigious architecture and design firms such as Kiran Kapadia Associates in Mumbai, Arcop Associates in Delhi, and Space Designers in Pune. These experiences exposed me to the intricacies of large-scale architecture and design projects, significantly shaping my understanding of detailing and design. At Sparc Design, our approach is deeply detail-oriented, a philosophy influenced by my formative years in these esteemed firms.
3 How do nature and travel influence your design work, and can you provide examples of projects where these influences are evident?
I find travel truly inspiring. It is not just a means of rejuvenation, but a constant source of learning and inspiration. Beyond merely refreshing the heart and spirit, it opens my eyes to unexpected sources of creativity. During one particular stroll down a street in my travels, I encountered a weave pattern that sparked a creative revelation. This seemingly mundane experience inspired the implementation of a significant light installation in one of my projects, highlighting how exposure to varied cultures and environments continually shapes and enhances my approach to design.
4 How do you balance creativity and functionality in your designs, especially in award-winning projects like “The Antique Modernist Home” and “The Earth and Metal Office”?
Functionality is paramount in design, where true skill lies in achieving creativity and functionality in every aspect. In Tattva, a service apartment project, we prioritized functionality to ensure usability, flow, and cost-effectiveness for the client. By incorporating locally available materials, we could integrate the five elements into the architectural design, creating not just a visual impact but also a psychological one. Similarly, in Ombre Home, we focused on functionality while selecting a material palette and design language that emphasizes natural, earthy, and organic materials. This approach enhances the physical and psychological well-being of our clients, demonstrating our commitment to both functionality and aesthetics in our designs.

Attending top industry exhibitions is a key part of our approach, allowing us to stay informed about the latest developments and integrate cutting-edge solutions into our projects. This dedication ensures that our work remains innovative, efficient, and of the highest quality.
6 Your work has received numerous awards and recognition. Which project are you most proud of, and why?
We are humbled and grateful for all the recognition and awards our work has received, as they serve as both an endorsement and an encouragement. Among our recent projects, I am particularly proud of Tattva, Ombre Home, and Morning Glory. In these projects, we successfully incorporated cultural and traditional references, ensuring that our designs are deeply rooted in their context. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic and functional aspects of the projects but also creates a strong connection to the local heritage, making these projects truly special to us.

9 What emerging trends in architecture and interior design are you most excited about, and how is Sparc Design incorporating these trends?
At Sparc Design, we are excited by several emerging trends in architecture and interior design that are transforming the industry. The emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendly materials is one of the most significant trends, and we incorporate this by using locally sourced materials, energy-efficient systems, and sustainable construction practices. Biophilic design, which integrates nature into built environments to enhance well-being, is another trend we embrace by incorporating natural elements like green walls, indoor plants, and ample natural light.
The rise of smart home technology is revolutionizing how spaces are designed and used, and we incorporate smart systems for automation and control of various home functions, enhancing convenience and efficiency. The minimalist and functional design trend, characterized by clean lines, open spaces, and multifunctional furniture, helps us create uncluttered, efficient, and visually appealing environments. At Sparc Design, we prioritize a client-centric approach to our designs, recognizing the importance of understanding and meeting the unique needs and preferences of each client. This approach allows us to deliver personalized solutions that exceed expectations and enhance client satisfaction. We begin with detailed consultations to understand the client’s vision, lifestyle, and specific requirements. This ensures that their input is incorporated throughout the design process. By maintaining open communication and providing visual and physical mock-ups, we enable clients to visualize the final result and provide feedback at every stage. This collaborative process allows us to create spaces that not only reflect the client’s individuality but also enhance their daily lives. Our commitment to understanding and incorporating client needs ensures that our designs are not only aesthetically pleasing and functional but also deeply resonant with those who inhabit them, fostering long-lasting satisfaction and loyalty.
11 How do you foresee the role of sustainability in future architectural and interior design projects?
Sustainability will play a crucial role in future architectural and interior design projects, driven by increasing awareness of environmental issues. Key trends include energy efficiency, with a focus on passive design strategies and renewable energy sources, as well as the use of sustainable materials and water conservation measures. Waste reduction, biophilic design, and smart technologies will also be prominent. These practices aim to reduce the environmental impact of buildings, improve occupant health and well-being, and achieve cost savings in the long term. As green building certifications become more prevalent, the industry will adopt sustainability as a standard practice. Consequently, this will shape the design, construction, and operation of buildings.
12 What advice would you give to young architects and designers entering the field today?
My advice to young architects and designers would be to focus on self-improvement rather than comparison, utilizing the virtual world for personal growth. It’s essential to be self-disciplined and have confidence in your abilities by believing in your own skills.
Embrace creativity, pay attention to detail, and always remember that the spaces you design have the power to influence lives and communities.”
