The Urban Development Department (UDD) of the Maharashtra government has granted approval for the construction of a 3 km underground section as part of the second phase of Mumbai Metro Line 5. This phase will connect Thane to Kalyan via Bhiwandi, spanning a total of 24.5 km.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), responsible for infrastructure development in Mumbai, had previously put the underground stretch between Dhamankar Naka and Temghar on hold. The UDD has now approved the MMRDA’s proposal with certain conditions, including no additional financial burden on the state government, submission of a detailed project report for the underground portion, and getting it approved by the administration.

A consultant would be appointed who will be responsible for both elevated and underground stretches. Tenders will be called for the work order accordingly. In Phase 1, 70% of the work on the 12.7 km elevated line between Thane and Bhiwandi has been completed.
